China is changing fast. In 2005 the preparations were under way for the 2008 Olympics. Everywhere you looked there was construction. Old neighborhoods are demolished in an instant to make way for modern apartment towers. Yes the old quarters are much more romantic, but... a great deal of the people in those old buildings had neither running water nor even a private latrine. It is still common to use communal latrines. So, what would you rather have? Running hot water and modern bathrooms, or a romantic crumbling house with a shared courtyard latrine?
