This time I decided that I needed some rest and forked up the soft sleeper supplement. It was far more comfortable and quiet than the open cabin hard sleep wagon. Two wagons down, people were simply sleeping on the floor. There were no other westerners in this train. Most tourists take the sleeper express directly from Hong Kong to Xian. I like to get a taste of the local life. Although in this case this was the easy way.
I traveled in this compartment with an elderly lady taking her sobbing 3 year old grand daughter back home to Luoyang where she lives and raises the child. The child's parents work in Guangzhou. This is a story shared by many families across China. People leave the interior in search of better economic opportunities in the fast growing industrial towns of the special economic zones near the coast.
